LLMs can analyze a patient’s medical history and dental concerns to tailor communication and educational materials. Imagine an LLM that generates customized preappointment emails or post-treatment instructions based on the patient’s needs.

LLMs could educate patients on oral health. Based on analyzing millions of studies and millions of patients’ electronic medical records, an LLM could develop personalized education about brushing, flossing, diet, and other dental hygiene topics that match a patient’s risk factors and preferences. LLMs could interpret patient-reported symptoms, and could often provide answers on why patients might be having problems and when to see their dentist. LLMs could explain procedures and medications in plain language, and they could describe the expected benefits and burdens of a treatment plan. LLMs could discuss and review options with patients, which might improve how well patients follow expert diagnoses and recommendations. LLMs could provide interactive chatbots that might differ from dental assistants in that they would be programmed to provide compassionate support and anxiety-arresting techniques to reduce the fear of visiting the dentist in patients with dental anxiety.

For dentists, they could examine patient records and medical histories, providing suggested diagnosis and treatment recommendations and even flagging potential side effects and contraindications. LLMs could rapidly crawl through the dental literature to help them stay up to speed on the latest research and best practice. LLMs could input accurate and comprehensive notes for the dentist without wasting time on formatting and spelling, and they could improve precision. They could be programmed to tailor communication to patients’ individual needs and preferences, improving engagement and satisfaction. Figure 4-6 illustrates a dentist using AI technology for oral health while an LLM provides summarization on a patient’s oral health history.
